To recognize and promote excellence and creativity in the public sector, including youth-related efforts. Top winners receive $100,000 while runners’ up receive lesser awards.

Funder: Ford Foundation, Harvard’s Kennedy School and Ash Institute for Democratic Governance and Innovation.

Eligibility: Public agencies.

Intercultural Harmony Program 10/01/08

To build positive relationships across cultural lines in areas that include youth, community service and the arts. Past grant amounts ranged from $5,000 to $25,000.

Funder: Laura Jane Musser Fund.

Eligibility: Nonprofits.

BJ’s grants 10/06/08

To enhance and enrich community programs that primarily benefit children and families. In 2007, BJ’s Charitable Foundation donated $1.69 million.

Funder: BJ’s Charitable Foundation.

Eligibility: Nonprofits in store communities.

Staples Foundation for Learning 10/10/08

For programs that provide job skills and/or education for all people, with a special emphasis on disadvantaged youth. Between $5,000 and $25,000.

Funder: Staples Foundation.

Eligibility: Nonprofits.

Best Buy Teach 10/12/08

To support K-12 schools with an integrated, interactive technology curriculum that engages students and makes learning fun. $500 to $10,000.

Funder: Best Buy.

Eligibility: Accredited K-12 public, private, parochial, magnet and charter schools.

Increase Your Green 10/13/08

For student-led projects to reduce the carbon footprint of schools. $1,500 for first prize and $500 for three second-place prizes.

Funder: Do Something.

Eligibility: Middle and high schoolers.

2008 Healthy Sprouts Awards 10/15/08

For school and youth garden programs that teach about nutrition and hunger. Of 20 schools or organizations selected, the top five will each receive a gift certificate valued at $500; the other 15 will receive $200 gift certificates.

Funder: National Gardening Association and Gardener’s Supply Co.

Eligibility: Schools and organizations.

2009 Soccer Program and Field grants 10/15/08

For projects and programs that develop players, coaches and referees in economically disadvantaged urban areas encompassing populations of 50,000 or more. Requests may range from $100,000 to $200,000.

Funder: U.S. Soccer Foundation.

Eligibility: A soccer-specific program or field project that benefits a nonprofit purpose and meets the established focus for the 2009 grant cycle, among other requirements.

Lowe’s Toolbox for Education 10/17/08

For school-improvement projects. $5,000 per school for a total of $5 million.

Eligibility: Public schools and public school parent-teacher groups.

Deadline: Oct. 17. (Warning: process will close early if 1,500 applications are received before the deadline.)

Youth Garden Grants 11/01/08

For child-centered garden programs that emphasize education, nutrition, environmental awareness, entrepreneurship, leadership development, team building, community support and service learning. 125 grants ranging from $250 to $1,000 will be awarded.

Funder: Home Depot and National Gardening Association.

Eligibility: Schools and community organizations.

Lorrie Otto Seeds for Education (SFE) Fund 11/15/08Lorrie Otto Seeds for Education (SFE) Fund – For schools and nature centers to plant and maintain natural landscapes. $100 to $500.

Funder: Wild Ones.

Eligibility: Schools, nature centers and nonprofit places of learning, including houses of worship.

ShopKo Foundation rollingShopKo Foundation supports nonprofit organizations located in ShopKo communities that focus on education, health and wellness. Support is provided for programs focusing on: at-risk students; literacy programs and activities recognizing educational achievement; and activities promoting healthy lifestyles and raising awareness of health-related concerns. May be an option for programs close to ShopKo stores. Check with the foundation for eligibility.

Grants.gov Grants.gov is your source to FIND and APPLY for federal government grants. There are over 1,000 grant programs offered by all federal grant making agencies.
Afterschool.gov Afterschool.gov can connect you to information on federal grants, how to organize a program and other resources.
Faith-Based And Community Initiatives This booklet provides some basic information about the Federal grants process. It also lists over 170 programs that may interest your organization. Grants programs are organized into general categories ranging from programs for elders and the homeless to those that serve at-risk youth and people making the transition from welfare to work.
Ford Motor Company Fund The Ford Motor Company Fund makes awards in six categories: education; environment; public policy; health and social programs; civic affairs and community development; arts and humanities.
Start Something Target and the Tiger Woods Foundation have collaborated to develop a free curriculum (available for different age groups) to aid kids to achieve their dreams. Students ages 8 to 18 who complete the curriculum are invited to apply for a grant of up to $5,000.
The Kresge Foundation Focuses on "bricks and mortar" funding as well as capital campaign matching and challenge grants to strengthen all kinds of nonprofits.
Verizon Foundation Focus on literacy, violence-prevention. Also offers volunteers and in-kind contributions.
The American Academy of Pediatrics Art Contest for children in grades 3 - 5 and 6 - 8. Winners will receive $500 and up to $1000 for travel related expenses to the 2007 AAP National Conference and Exhibition in San Francisco on 10/27/07. The theme is, Things I can Do To Keep Safe and Healthy.
Grants for Youth Promoting Collaboration The Southern Poverty Law Center is sponsoring the Mix It Up Grants program, which provides $500 for youth-directed acticist projects that identify, cross and challenge social boundaries in schools and communities.
Funding for Snacks Information on funding for snacks and other food programs is available.

National Endowment for the Human An independent grant-making agency of the United States government dedicated to supporting research, education, preservation, and public programs in the humanities.
School Grants Available resources and tips to assist K-12 educators apply for and obtain special grants for a variety of projects.
The Educational Foundation of America The Educational Foundation of America (EFA) provides grants for projects related to the environment, the crisis of human overpopulation and reproductive freedom, Native Americans, arts, education, medicine and human services. Applicants are required to send a letter of inquiry as the first step.
C-Span Classroom Grants

For educators who want a videotape (or tapes) of C-SPAN programming. Videotape or tapes are provided.

Funder: C-Span.

Eligibility: K-12 or college/university educators.

GTECH After School Advantage

A national community investment program to provide community agencies and public schools with state-of-the-art computer labs. 115 After School Advantage computer centers – each receiving an average of $15,000 – are planned for 2008.

Funder: GTECH, a lottery game company.

Eligibility: Nonprofit 501(C)(3) community agencies or public schools that serve minority and at-risk children aged 5 to 15 and that house an after-school program in need of a computer lab.
